With the Jaguar F-Type Coupe about to hit the road, Chris Harris takes the F-Type R Coupe on road and on track to see how good it is.
In so many ways we wish Jaguar had delivered the F-Type Coupe before they delivered the F-Type Roadster; it seems to be so much the better car and so much more Jaguar.
Still, the Jaguar F-Type Coupe is here, looks glorious, sounds great and, in the 542bhp R Coupe, delivers stunning performance.
But what’s it really like in the hands of a man whose opinion is fast becoming the default for a properly valid look at a performance car, Chris Harris?
Chris has taken the Type R and wrung it out on road and on track and seems to see it as a proper triumph for Jaguar. In fact, he believes it’s an ‘affordable’ Mercedes SLS.
In terms of looks, there is little to compare with the F-Type; it may not be quite as glorious as the E-Type, but it comes a close second, certainly from the back.
Chris has a few gripes about the interior – not especially cohesive, some cheapness in some materials and still an Infotainment setup that feels more Atari than Apple – and the puzzlement we all feel when we see the all aluminium F-Type weighs almost as much as the Albert Hall.
But it’s a thoughtful and incisive look at the Jaguar F-Type Coupe R and probably tells you all you need to know. If you can afford it, it’s a cracking car to own.
