In a big change from his normal WRX Subaru, Ken Block takes to the grit and gravel in a 1978 MK II Escort
We’ve got used to that master of drifting and driving, Ken Block, showing off his skills in an AWD, state-of-the-art Subaru WRX. As we’ve said before, the man can do things with a car that don’t seem possible. Last time out we had Ken out playing at ‘Mini-Me’ with Rob Dyrdek, but this time we find out just what Ken’s made of as he takes to a RWD MK II Escort, together with Chris Atkinson.
Early Ford Escorts were capable of more smiles per mile – certainly on a budget – than anything else on the road at the time. My earliest fun with an Escort was even earlier than this in an Escort Mexico – which was a white, 1974 model. Huge fun and very quick by the standards of the day.
So how does Ken get on with a 1978 MK II Escort? You won’t be surprised to learn he grins from ear to ear and proves it’s not just the gizmos in the Subaru WRX that keeps him on the road. True, this is no stock Escort. It sports a 280bhp lump and a six-speed sequential ‘box, so it has some modern toys. But it’s still an MK II Escort.
And it sings in Ken’s hands.
