The Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid joins Kia’s regular Niro Hybrid in its UK range, offering a total output of 139bhp and the promise of 36 mile EV range. Costs from £30,495.
The Kia Niro Hybrid arrived last year as Kia delivered its first proper hybrid production car, built on a new platform specifically for Hybrids and EVs and with Crossover/SUV styling and a proper six-speed double-clutch gearbox rather than the usual hybrid CVT.
It was a promising start to Kia’s hybrid plans, and now we get the logical extension – the Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid – going on sale in the UK from £30,495 (£29,995 after taxpayer grant).
The Niro PHEV gets the same 1.6 litre Atkinson engine as the regular hybrid, but it comes with a more powerful electric motor, the two of which deliver a combined 139bhp, a 0-62mph of 10.4 seconds and an official EV range of 36 miles.
That official range will probably be around 25 miles in the real world, and the 217.3mpg should translate to something around 60mpg, although if you’re good and plug-in every day it will be much better than that.
The Niro Plug-in comes with Drive select Modes allowing automatic hybrid or EV only running, regenerative braking to harvest kinetic energy, a coasting guide control and advanced HVAC to control power usage.
The Niro Plug-in is a standalone model, so it comes with a spec based on the Niro 3 Hybrid with Kia Connected including TomTom Sat Nav, wireless smartphone charging, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Parkiong sensors, roof rails, privacy glass, LED tail lights, 16″ aerodynamic alloys, Climate, and DAB are all standard as is black leather, chrome highlights, heated seats and steering wheel and auto wipers.
The Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid is now on sale at Kia’s UK dealers. And it looks a good offering.
