Lexus LF-FC Concept gets hydrogen fuel cell power

The Lexus LF-FC Concept has arrived at the Tokyo Motor Show, complete with hydrogen fuel cell power and bold design. Looks to preview the next Lexus LS.
Not only that, but Lexus has also given their ‘LS in waiting’ a very modern powertrain, with a hydrogen fuel cell powering the Lexus’s electric motors.
Lexus are giving no clue about the power output of the LF-FC, but the hydrogen fuel cell stack – located at the back, with control unit at the front and the hydrogen tank in the middle for optimal weight distribution – provides power for the main electric motor on the back axle, as well as a pair of in-wheel motors at the front, delivering four-wheel drive and precise torque control.
In Cruising mode, the LF-LC uses the hydrogen fuel cell to both power the electric motors and charge the batter, but if you want to get a shake on it shifts to Acceleration mode which throws battery power in to the equation too.
The design of the LS-FC is a big, four-door coupe, with a new take on the feature Lexus spindle grill, big wheels and lights at the back that look to have been inspired by the Toyota Mirai.
Inside is plush and swathed in leather and wood, with switchgear replaced by umpteen screens and an advanced interface that can respond to gesture controls.
It’s an impressive car, and despite its futuristic powertrain and interior does look like a suitable evolution of the Lexus LS, although we’re sure the new LS – expected to arrive next year – will be a toned-down version and offer hybrid powertrains in addition to the hydrogen fuel cell power in the LF-FC concept.
