Mercedes-Maybach GLS Luxury SUV Concept Tease
A Mercedes-Maybach GLS Concept will debut at the Beijing Motor Show as Mercedes aim to challenge the Bentley Bentayga and Range Rover with a luxury SUV of their own.
When you think of large premium SUVs you tend to default to the Range Rover – especially in SVAutobiography guise – and the Bentley Bentayga. And Mercedes want a piece of the action. The Mercedes GLS has never really been a challenge to the Range Rover – never mind the Bentley Bentayga – but Mercedes are planning to change that with a Maybach version of the new GLS SUV, and it’s going to arrive as a concept at the Beijing Motor Show this month.
Mercedes uploaded a video a few days ago on Facebook (below) which looked like it could be a tease for the Maybach GLS Concept = albeit one with a couple of ‘Thrones’ in the back – but Autocar now say they’ve had confirmation that the luxury SUV is on the way to Beijing as a Concept and will arrive later this year as a full-blown production model.
If the video is anything to go by it does look like Mercedes are aiming to deliver the Maybach GLS with plenty of Maybach glitz and gloss, although it’s unlikely they’ll go the whole hog and deliver it with a V12; it seems all but certain it will instead be powered by Mercedes’ AMG 4.0 litre turbo V8.
We’ll find out just how glitzy the Maybach GLS is in a few weeks in China.
