The Women’s Car of the Year Award kicked off in 2009 after New Zealand car scribe Sandy Myhre decided a woman’s voice was needed in the male-dominated world of petrolheads.
As we’ve said in previous years, the Women’s COTY award is interesting, but proves that even with a female perspective – and additional considerations like ‘Wow’ and sex appeal coming in to the judging – a good car is still a good car.
In other categories, it was the Mercedes S-Class again as Luxury COTY (pipping the Audi A8 and Tesla Model S to the post), Family Car was the Audi A3, Sports Car the Aud S3, Economy Car the Honda Jazz, Green Car the Tesla Model X and the SUV of the year the Range Rover Sport.
Sue Baker, UK judge of WWCOTY, said:
This is an outstanding accolade for a car which encompasses everything women want in a vehicle, namely a high calibre driving experience, impeccable safety credentials, top-notch comfort and high build quality, all at a justifiable price.
Mercedes-Benz should be proud of its achievement in winning the Women’s World Car of the Year with the S-Class, because it is very hard to get onto the short-list and win a category, let alone the supreme trophy
And just for a bit of fun, the 21 judges (from 16 countries) were asked to nominate their dream car, and the winner was the Jaguar F-Type Coupe.
As we said, women’s taste in cars isn’t exactly the polar opposite to the male perspective.
