The original Ferrari 246 GT Dino
A Ferrari Dino for the 21st century looks to be on the way as Ferrari’s ultimate boss, Sergio Marchionne, says it’s when, not if, the Dino returns.
Rumours of the revival of the Ferrari Dino have been rumbling around for a decade, with many commentators expecting Ferrari to put the Dino badge on the back of a cheaper, V6-engined Ferrari to take on cars like the Porsche 911. Just as the original Dino was conceived. But so far the rumours have come to nought, but Autocar managed to get Sergio Marchionne – FCA and Ferrari boss – to confirm that a new Dino is a matter of when, not if.
The original Dino – named after Enzo’s beloved son – was a V6-powered, mid-engined car designed to be an entry-level Ferrari, but, at least initially, it did without the Ferrari badge and was simply badged ‘Dino’.
But it seems Marchionne’s plans for a new Dino will be for a mid-engined car that sits below the 488 GTB but on a par – at least in terms of price – with the California. So think around £150k and power in the region of 500bhp.
It seems likely the new Dino will be a twin turbo V6 Ferrari – the original Dino 206 GT had a 2.0 litre V6 – probably using a variant of the V6 engine Ferrari designed for Maserati.
There seems to be no indication from Marchionne as to when a new Dino might arrive, but we now at least know it will arrive.
