New Hyundai Veloster N is the i30 N for the US
Hyundai reveals a new Veloster at the Detroit Motor Show, including a Veloster N Performance model which will offer the US market what the Hyundai i30 N does in the UK.
We knew Hyundai were delivering a new Veloster at the Detroit Motor Show, and we expected them to include a new Performance version. And they have. The updated Hyundai Veloster has been revealed in Detroit in three guises, one of which is the new Hyundai Veloster N.
The US isn’t getting the impressive i30 N we’ve now got in the UK and Europe, and instead it gets an updated version of the quirky Veloster Coupe complete with the underpinnings from the i30 N.
The Veloster gets a new body – although it’s an evolutionary design – and retains the slightly odd 2+1 door layout, with new LED lights, a more coupe profile, big bumpers, a roof mounted spoiler at the back and flared wheelarches.
Under the skin it’s the same recipe as the i30 N, with electronically controlled suspension, limited slip diff, Drive Modes – Normal, Sport, Eco and N, plus a Custom N – and the same 271 bhp 2.0 litre turbo petrol.
The US is also getting a couple of more mainstream Velosters, with an entry-level 2.0 litre delivering 147bhp and a Veloster Turbo with 201bhp from its 1.6 litre Turbo.
But just in case you’re still hankering after a Veloster, don’t expect the new Veloster N to make it to the UK. It’s won’t.
