The new Jaguar F-type 2.0 litre is showcased on video by Jaguar’s Chief Product Engineer Sports Cars, and it not only looks good but sounds good too.
Ten days ago, Jaguar revealed the latest F-Type comes with something which would have been unthinkable just a few years ago – a 2.0 litre petrol engine.
The idea of an appealing F-Type having just four-cylinders is still anathema to petrol heads, but times have changed and engines have got a lot cleverer and a lot more powerful, which means impressive power and reliability from smaller engines than ever before – and the new 2.0 litre F-Type is no different.
It’s 2.0 litre Ingenium engine delivers 300PS (296bhp in old money) and 295lb/ft of torque, enough to get the new F-Type to 62mph in just 5.7 seconds – only 0.4 seconds slower than the V6.
Not only is the new engine almost as quick as the V6, it promises to offer improved dynamics too thanks to its lower weight, which also means improved headline economy of 39.2mpg (but not in the real world).
It’s not a lot cheaper in the UK than the V6 (just £2,365) but in other markets its sub-2.0 litre engine will offer tax advantages and lower prices, and it looks almost indistinguishable from its more powerful siblings.
It also gets the latest F-Type looks, which means it now looks a lot better thanks to modest tweaks to the bumpers and lights, which have made the F-Type, certainly at the front, a lot better looking.
Ian Callum, Jaguar’s Design boss, said:
Retaining the silhouette of F-TYPE across the model range is really important to us whether it’s the 200mph SVR or the new 2.0-litre four-cylinder. This is a true Jaguar sports car and a true F-TYPE – we didn’t want to dilute the design DNA. Even so, this car has its own unique character, and the new single tailpipe finisher exemplifies this.
But a 4-pot engine is never going to sound right in a Jaguar sports car, is it?
Well, that’s what we thought, but Jaguar say they have ‘meticulously tuned’ the F-Type’s exhaust note to make it sound as good as it should, and from what we can hear in the video below – a showcase for the new F-Type by Jaguar’s chief Sports Car Engineer, Erol Mustafa – they’ve been good to their word.
