We’ve still not seen official images of the new Mercedes E63 AMG, although the spy shots of the car are becoming less and less disguised as its launch date gets closer.
But at least we know now when that launch will be – the New York Motor Show in April. So we shouldn’t have to wait long to see proper pictures of the M5 rivalling E63 AMG in its latest iteration.
So what do we know about the car? Well, the pictures here, and the official pictures of the new Mercedes E Class with the AMG bodykit, give you a pretty good idea. But what about under the skin? Well, this car was signed off long before the world went seriously eco-mad, so it still belongs to the school of German ‘Horsepower Wars’, which is actually nice to see (from a purely selfish point of view).
The 6.2 liter AMG lump gets tweaked to deliver a few more horses (up 11bhp to 525bhp) and benefits from the 7-speed ‘box from the SL63. Other revisions include tweaks to the suspension (with at least partial air-suspension) and beefed-up brakes.
For everyday use the E63 AMG was the better choice. For a mad dash, take the M5. For regualr driving, including mad dashes, the E63 AMG is the best compromise. Let’s hope Mercedes keep the recipe going on this new version.
This will probably be the last of the big V8s from Mercedes for a while – make the most of it.
