New Mercedes GLE Coupe
The new Mercedes GLE Coupe is revealed ahead of a Frankfurt debut, with new styling and a choice of two diesel-engined variants and an AMG53 petrol.
It’s getting on for five years since the Mercedes GLE first arrived to give the BMW X6 a run for its money, so it’s time for a new GLE Coupe. And here it is, revealed ahead of a public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month to save you waiting. There are no real surprises about the GLE Coupe, apart from perhaps a little surprise that Mercedes’ design team decided to simply chop the tail flat as if a hot wire was sliced through the metal, although the proportions have changed a bit.
The GLE Coupe stays a bit shorter than the new GLE, but it is longer than the old model and with an extra bit in the wheelbase to make it a bit more commodious, all adding up to a more sporty-looking offering.
Inside it’s straight out of the GLE, complete with a pair of 12.3″ screens for instruments and infotainment complete with ‘Hey Mercedes’ control.
Under the bonnet, at launch at least, there’s a choice of two diesel engines and a single petrol, but the petrol is a 48-volt mild hybrid AMG 53 petrol.
Entry-level for the GLE Coupe is the GLE 350 d with a 3.0 litre 268bhp straight-six, or you can have the same engine with 325bhp in the GLE 400 d.
The new AMG GLE 53 Coupe gets 429bhp from its 3.0 litre six – good for 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds – with power going to all four wheels through a nine-speed auto ‘box, and comes complete with a bit of cosmetic AMG titivation and air suspension as standard.
The 2020 Mercedes GLE Coupe will arrive in Mercedes’ UK showrooms next spring.
