The new Porsche 718 Cayman has been revealed at the Beijing Motor Show, joining the 718 Boxster with 4-cylinder turbo power. Costs from £40,000.
Porsche revealed last year that the Boxster and Cayman would be re-named the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman (no doubt previewing the dropping of the ‘Boxster’ and ‘Cayman names before too long to make the Coupe and Roadster Porsche 718), and revealed the new 718 Boxster complete with four-cylinder Turbo power in January. Now, at the Beijing Motor Show, the Porsche 718 Cayman has been revealed to complete the transformation to the more efficient four-cylinder engines for Porsche’s smaller sports cars, in both standard Cayman and Cayman S guises.
The arrival of the 718 Cayman may upset the Porsche anoraks with the forsaking of the flat-six engines for the new four-cylinder boxer, but there’s no doubt the new 718 cars offer more power and better economy, even if the noise isn’t as appealing.
The entry-level Cayman gets a 295bhp 2.0 litre flat-four with 280lb/ft of torque – up 33bhp and 73lb/ft of torque – and the Cayman S gets a 2.5 litre flat-four Turbo good for 345bhp and 310lb/ft of torque, and increase on the old Cayman S of 34bhp and 44lb/ft of torque. Not to be sniffed at.
That extra power means a 718 Cayman with PDK and Sport Chrono can get to 62mph in 4.7 seconds and the Cayman S in 4.2 seconds, with top speeds of 170mph and 177mph respectively. From a 2.0 litre petrol.
Despite the extra power and improved performance, the 718 Cayman comes with official economy of 38mpg and emissions of 168g/km.
Away from the engine changes, the new 718 gets firmer springs, tweaked dampers and anti-roll bars and bigger back wheels, with cosmetic changes similar to the 718 Boxster with a new nose, bigger air intakes, tweaked headlights and new lights at the back, with small tweaks to the interior including a new steering wheel and Infotainment.
The new Porsche 718 Cayman will cost from £39,878 for the regular Cayman and £48,834 for the Cayman S.
