A new hatchback from Suzuki – the Suzuki Baleno – will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show as a ‘Big Swift’ before going on sale in the UK in 2016.

The Suzuki Swift is a really rather good supermini hatch, so it makes sense for Suzuki to try and emulate its appeal with a bigger version – step forward the Suzuki Baleno, a new hatchback from Suzuki that will debut in production guise at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The production version of the Suzuki IK-2 Concept from Geneva earlier this year, the Baleno revives a name from Suzuki’s history to create a new car to sit above the Swift as a B-Segment offering.

Suzuki aren’t being massively forthcoming about the Baleno, but they do say it will offer a stylish design with new technologies and a spacious interior. Which sounds just fine.

The new technologies bit includes Suzuki’s new 1.0 litre BOOSTERJET turbo petrol engine which should offer more power and performance and better economy and emission s than the Swift’s 1.2 litre naturally aspirated engine.

Although the Baleno will debut in production guise at Frankfurt, it won’t actually launch in the UK until summer 2016. Suzuki hasn’t revealed prices yet, but the Baleno will probably start at around £10k.
