New Volkswagen I.D. Buggy Concept
The Volkswagen I.D. Buggy Concept is previewed ahead of a Geneva Motor Show as VW’s 21st century electric take on the VW Beach Buggy.
Yes, it’s yet another electric car concept from Volkswagen as they continue to push themselves as makers of fluffy green electric cars with a another retro-inspired concept – the Volkswagen I.D. Buggy Concept.Reaching back in to its history (just as it has with the I.D. Buzz Electric Camper Van) to deliver the ID Buggy as a modern take on the VW Beetle-based Beach Buggies of the 1960s and ’70s, Volkswagen is intent on showing its EVs don’t have to be just practical urban transport.
Using VW’s MEB Platform – not the Beetle’s – VW are keen to prove the flexible electric platform can deliver niche EVs too, and this concept – which is likely to be a one-off – has no fixed doors or roof, big 0ff-road wheels and tyres an open sills.
Klaus Bischoff, VW’s Head Designer, said:
A buggy is more than a car. It is vibrancy and energy on four wheels. These attributes are embodied by the new e-buggy, which demonstrates how a modern, non-retro interpretation of a classic can look and, more than anything else, the emotional bond that electric mobility can create.
VW aren’t saying what sort of battery or electric motors the Buggy Concept has but, unlike the rear-engined, RWD Beetle Buggies, there’s no reason the new VW Buggy Concept couldn’t have a motor on each axle for 4WD.
Which sounds fun, but don’t bet on a production model.
