The new Volvo XC40 has been revealed and its now on sale in the UK, with full price and specifications already available. Costs from £27,905 to £40,305.
Yesterday the new Volvo XC40 was revealed, and it looks good enough to upset the status quo in the premium compact market significantly. But how much does the Volvo XC40 cost in the UK, and what do you get for your money?
At launch, engine options are still Volvo’s four-cylinder Drive-E engines – the 1.5 litre three-cylinder and Twin Engine hybrid will follow on – we’ve already seen on Volvo’s current range.
They are a 156bhp T3, 190bhp T4 and 247bhp T5 petrols plus the 150bhp D3 and 190bhp D4, with the T3 only available in FWD, the D3 with FWD or 4WD and the rest with 4WD.
The more powerful versions get Volvo’s automatic gearbox, but the T3 and D3 get a manual, although you can option the auto on the D3.
Trim levels follow the familiar Volvo pattern of Momentum, R-Design and Inscription, as well as the recent arrival of ‘Pro’ versions of each trim for added goodies.
The entry-level XC40 Momentum comes with Volvo’s 9″ Sensus touch screen with voice activation and Sat Nav, Volvo On Call, LED headlights, Climate with ‘CleanZone’, 12.3″ active TFT instrument panel, rear parking sensors and 18″ wheels (with options up to 21″).

Safety stuff features heavily too, with AutomatiC Emergency Braking which can spot pedestrians, cyclists and large animals and Oncoming Lane Mitigation.
The sporty XC40 R-Design gets a gloss black grille and lower bumper sections, black roof and door mirrors, dual exhaust pipes, sports suspension, 18″ diamond cut alloys, leather/Nubuck upholstery, front seat cushion extensions, aluminium trim and perforated leather wheel and gear knob.
The XC40 Inscription gets leather, power operated tailgate, parking sensors front and back, extra chrome, driftwood interior inlays and, if you’ve got an auto version, a crystal glass gear lever like the XC90 T8.
Volvo are also offering ‘Pro’ versions across the range – Momentum Pro, R-Design Pro and Inscription Pro – which add extra goodies from Volvo’s extensive options list.
Momentum Pro adds stuff like power driver’s seat, heated front seats and windscreen and active bending lights with adaptive shadow technology (it blanks out the ‘blinding’ bit of the headlight beam when needed).
The R-Design Pro gets the same extra but with 20″ alloys too, and the Inscription Pro follows suit but with 19″ alloys and powered front passengers eat.
Options include the ‘must have’ Xenium Pack which includes Panoramic roof, 360o surround view parking camera and Park Assist Pilot, Wireless phone charging, Smartphone Integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a new Harman Kardon Sound System.
You can also add Volvo’s Pilot Assist semi autonomous stuff right across the XC40 range, which will ‘drive’ you at speeds up to 80mph within lane markings.
Volvo does seem to have covered all the bases with the XC40 model options, but if you want an all-singing, all-dancing version you could grab one of the XC40 First Edition models (D4 or T5) which get the R-Design Pro spec plus Xenium Pack, Pilot Assist, power tailgate, heated rear seats, Harman Kardon and Wireless Phone Charging.
It’s a comprehensive offering from Volvo, and the XC40 looks set to make a real impact. It’s already available to order at Volvo’s UK dealers with first customer cars due in early 2018.

mark says
JUST LIKE THE jAG E-PACE, 50,000 DOLLARS FOR A LOADED iNSCRIPTION or E with everything. I say WHEW. The packaging is really small, so I would have to see the back seat. The question for a lot of buyers is going to be, do I move up to XC60, or F-Pace, at only a 1000 an inch (likely about 10 inches apart)? For a more premium and luxe offering in both cases, if this amounts to $100 a month in the lease or 10K in the purchase, then IMO, with the expected plummet of the resale after two to three years, in the smaller expensive models, the next segment is the better buy with the better tech and luxe, particularly for Volvo XC60 and F-Pace. maybe these are OK for the urban dwellers who don’t buy loaded and don’t need the extra room, but once you load on options, these little vehicles seem like they just get too pricey.
