The Nissan IDS Concept has been revealed at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show to demonstrate Nissan’s autonomous driving plans – and a future Nissan LEAF.
Just as the German car makers love to make a splash at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Japanese aim to do the same at the Tokyo Motor Show, which is why the Nissan IDS Concept has arrived on the Tokyo floor.Showcasing the future of Nissan design and technology, the IDS showcases Nissan’s expectations for autonomous driving, with AI able to learn both different driving styles and adapt to road conditions, and learn how the driver drives, emulating that in its delivery.
And although the driver is able to take control of the IDS manually, there’s always the IDS ‘Nanny’ lurking in the background to jump in and take over if disaster looms which will, Nissan expect, reduce to almost zero driver-error accidents.
Powering the IDS is a 60kWh battery pack, twice that of the current LEAF which, if the rumours are right, will feature Nissan’s breakthrough battery technology capable of delivering twice the power from the same size battery as is currently possible.
The design of the IDS is perhaps a little ‘Concept’ heavy, but it does use Nissan’s boomerang lights front and back, a recognisable Nissan grill, low coupe roofline and rising waistline. It is ‘concept’, but not hard to imagine as production possible.
Inside is perhaps more concept heavy, with the controls moving away when the car is driving itself, changeable seating modes and gesture controls.
It seems likely that much of the design – and the 60kWh battery pack – will arrive as a Nissan LEAF before the end of thed ecade.
