Nissan will produce a MILLION electrified cars annually by 2022

Nissan has revealed its plans to extend its range of electrified vehicles will mean annual production of one million EVs and hybrids by 2022.

Nissan was a pioneer in electric cars with the LEAF – which has now sold more than 300,000 – and the new LEAF is selling so well it’s now the fastest selling EV in Europe.

But with every car maker on the planet delivering more and more electrified cars as we reach a tipping point, Nissan has no intention of giving up on its dominance in the EV market.

So, as part of its Nissan M.O.V.E. to 2022 plan, Nissan has set itself some big goals to make sure its EV lead remains intact.

The plan is that by 2022 Nissan will be building a million electrified cars a year – yes, a year – as it builds eight new EVs to build on the LEAF reputation and legacy, and introduce its new e-Power models – a range-extender hybrid – already available in Japan to more markets.

Nissan will also be launching an EV offensive in China under different brands, bring to market an electric Kei mini vehicle in Japan and electrify new Infiniti models from 2021.

Part of the new model offensive will be the arrival of the ‘LEAF SUV‘, a global Crossover inspired by the IMx Concept, likely to be a big seller.

But it’s not just electrification Nissan are diving in to in a big way – expecting 40 per cent of sales in Europe to be electrified Nissans by 2022 – but rolling out ProPilot to a million cars a year by 2022 too (which is already available on the new LEAF and Qashqai), and aiming for 100 per cent connectivity on new Nissan, Infiniti and Datsun models.

Philippe Klein, Nissan’s Chief Planning Officer, said:

Our product and technology strategy is dedicated to positioning Nissan to lead the automotive, technology and business evolution. Our efforts are focused on delivering Nissan Intelligent Mobility, encompassing the three core elements of electrification, autonomous drive, connectivity and new mobility services.

Nissan has been telling us the future is electric cars ever since the LEAF arrived eight years ago. It certainly seems to be now.
