Nissan X-Trail gets NEW engines and a new Dual Clutch ‘box

Nissan has upgraded the X-Trail SUV for 2019 with a new petrol and new diesel engine and a new seven-speed dual clutch gearbox.

The Nissan X-Trail is Nissan’s best-selling car around the globe (although not in the UK), and it conspires to be a bit more able than most of its ilk off-road. Which, if you live anywhere remotely prone to actually needing 4WD, makes it an appealing buy. And now it’s been improved.

Nissan promise the new engines – one petrol and one diesel – are more efficient than the old engines, delivering reduced CO2 emissions and improved economy. There’s also a six-speed manual gearbox and a new, seven-speed, dual clutch gearbox, as well as 2WD and 4WD. But not in all combinations.

The new diesel engine is a 1.7 litre with 148bhp and 251lb/ft of torque – a replacement for the old 1.6 litre diesel – which comes as standard with 2WD and official economy of 41.5mpg. If you opt for the 4WD version you take a slight knock in economy, with and official figure of 39.8 mpg.

If you’d rather opt for a petrol engine in the X-Trail then you now have a 1.3 litre four-pot petrol – which only comes with 2WD and the new DCT ‘box – replacing the old 1.6 litre petrol, delivering 158bhp and 199lb/ft of torque with official economy of 33-35mpg. 

The new 1.3 litre petrol X-Trail costs from £26,590, and the 1.7 litre diesel from £25,795. Add the 4WD to the 1.7 litre diesel X-Trail and it’ll cost an extra £3,200.

Both new engines are Euro6d-Temp compliant, good new for company car drivers.
