Range Rover Sport Coupe is the Land Rover take on the Jaguar F-Pace

The Range Rover Sport Coupe – perhaps the Range Rover Velar – will be more a crossover than SUV and Land Rover’s take on the Jaguar F-Pace.

It’s only a couple of days since we reported that the new Jaguar F-Pace – Jaguar’s first foray in to SUVs, although Jaguar don’t consider the F-Pace an SUV – is already Jaguar’s biggest selling car, and just yesterday we reported the F-Pace taking best SUV in the Scottish Car of the Year instead of a Land Rover.

So it’s rather apposite that Jaguar having nicked a chunk of Land Rover’s USP with the F-Pace that Land Rover are about to do the same with the new Range Rover Sport Coupe, due to debut at the Geneva Motor Show next year, and which could be called the Range Rover Velar (the original code name for the first Range Rover).

But whatever name Land Rover give this new Range Rover, it’s designed to sit between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport, and be the most road-focussed Land Rover there is, appealing to the city crowd, not the country buyer.

Emphasising that is the underpinnings for the RRS Coupe, which are not those of the Range Rover Sport and full-size Range Rover, but borrowed from the new Jaguar F-Pace, confirming the new Coupe will be all about the road, not the rough stuff.

The emphasis on road dynamics rather than mud-plugging prowess won’t see the RRS Coupe devoid of 4WD ability, but it will be set up for the road primarily and come with JLR’s latest Ingenium engines – in 4-pot 2.0 litre guise and soon to arrive 3.0 litre 6-pot – and would look to be an ideal candidate for the new V8 from BMW expected to be heading to Jaguars and Land Rovers soon.

With just a few months to go until the arrival of the Range Rover Sport Coupe / Velar, expect much more information filtering out from JLR, and elsewhere.
