Renault Kwid Concept is a bonkers baby SUV

The Renault KWID Concept – revealed today and debuting at the Delhi Auto Expo – is a concept small SUV for emerging markets.

There are concepts of new cars where you can clearly see they’re heading for production, and then there are concepts that look like the designers have been allowed to go berserk with little though to an eventual production car. The new Renault Kwid falls firmly in the latter.

Said to be aimed at younger buyers in emerging markets – and designed with Renault’s designers in India – the Kwid Concept comes with a conventional 1.2 litre petrol engine and dual-clutch box – and can take the ZOE’s EV powertrain – but that’s seems to be where any connection with reality ends.

The Kwid gets over-sized wheels, short overhangs and a yellow and grey body that looks like it came from the Tonka school of design. Renault say it’s even designed to look like it’s bouncing along.

Inside, the Kwid gets an odd seating arrangement with a front bench for three with the driver sitting in the middle and slightly forward, and room for two in the back.

The elastomer webbed seats are suspended over a white solid base, the front seats have AirCon controls for the rear passengers on the back and there’s a tablet media system. It all looks very ‘concept-y’.

But perhaps the most odd feature is a built in, remote-controlled drone that flies out the back of the Kwik to hover above and let the occupants of the Kwid see the traffic ahead or take photos. What on earth would happen if a queue of traffic all had drones flying above?

The Renault Kwid as it stands almost certainly doesn’t do any more than preview the rough size and shape of a forthcoming baby SUV from Renault for emerging markets.

But we’re sure the designers had a hoot putting it together.
