VW’s Spanish arm SEAT today unveiled their vision of the future, with the SEAT Leon Twin Drive Prototype unveiling in Barcelona.
The Twin Drive concept is simple, but quite promising. It offers an electric motor for running around town, but switches to a diesel or petrol engine when out of town.
This is just a prelude to what SEAT sees as a long-term commitment to hybrid, electric and other low emission cars, with the aim of phasing out conventional internal combustion engines in the long term.
The Twin Drive project will result in a range of Ecomotive cars offering exceptional economy and extremely low emissions coming to fruition by 2014. The project car features an electric motor running on lithium ion batteries, and has extensive modifications made to the cars running gear and electrics.
Of course, SEAT has access (as judged appropriate) to the technology of VW. However, it seems unlikely that SEAT will get access to the VW BlueSport concept, which is aimed at a more ‘Exclusive’ market and will carry a premium price tag, so this is a good way for SEAT to get involved at the more prosaic level in the burguoning EV/hybrid market.
