A new industry report declares that Tesla’s lead in EV production will be totally lost by 2021, with electric cars from mainstream makers eclipsing Elon Musk’s Tesla.
Tesla has been a real electric car pioneer, going where no established car maker dared and building real electric cars with real appeal. But Tesla’s head start in EV production, climate concerns and the Dieselgate crisis have all pushed mainstream, established car makers to move in to Tesla’s market space. And it doesn’t look good for Tesla.
A new report from industry analysts PA Consulting declares that tesla will continue to lead the EV pack in 2019, but by 2021 they will become an also-ran.
By 2021 it will be Mercedes leading the pack as its EQ electric cars take the top spot – a process which starts with the soon to be launched Mercedes EQ C – but they won’t be the only real car maker putting Tesla in the shade.
The report concludes that BMW will be sitting in second place by 2021, followed by Nissan/Renault, VW, Volvo and Toyota, with Tesla lucky to be in seventh spot. Chasing tesla by 2021 will be Hyundai in eighth, Jaguar Land Rover in ninth and GM in tenth.
PA Consultancy came to its conclusion by using ranking factors like technology and strategy, Battery Technology, Supplier Network and Financials to come to their conclusion. It may not be accurate – time will tell – but there’s no doubt pressures on Tesla are about to increase significantly.

- Mercedes

This is a stupid survey with not enough real world info. They are forgetting first that not everyone cares about a fancy expensive car over 50K once electric is more common. What about Ford who they left out completely which is coming next year with a 300 mile small SUV, and likely at a real price of 35,000 fully loaded. How many people are going to be buying electric Mercedes and BMW’s at 55 and 60 thousand, if not higher (even the smallest of which will be near 50) in the real world, when by then there will be ‘real people’ offerings at 35K, especially with the cost of batteries coming down? I would make my world list as VW, Ford, Nissan/Renault, Hyundai, Toyota, Tesla, then the rest.
