The Toyota Land Cruiser Se Concept is heading for the Tokyo Motor Show previewing a future electric Land Cruiser.
Just about every proper rufty tufty SUV on the market now is as much a big, gadget-laden, high-riding Hatch as it is a workhorse built to go anywhere and shake off whatever terrain it meets with alacrity.Even the new Land Rover Defender has turned from a basic terrain basher in to yet another take on the Range Rover recipe, with gadgets galore and whopping prices to match.
But throughout the transformation of traditional workhorses in to playthings for the wealthy, Toyota has remained steadfast in its mission to deliver an SUV that’s really capable of doing the rough stuff without breaking down every five minutes – the Toyota Land Cruiser.
We’ve recently seen the arrival of a new Land Cruiser which, although more cosseting than earlier Land Cruisers, still looks the part – perhaps even more so with its retro looks – and is designed to do all that previous generation of Land Cruisers over the last 70 years – and more than 10 million sold – have achieved.
But as we head in to an electric future, Toyota is giving serious thought to what will eventually replace the Land Cruiser, and here it is – the Toyota Land Cruiser Se, heading for a debut at the Tokyo Motor Show as a first look at a future electric Land Cruiser.
So far, we have very little on the Land Cruiser EV (other than the photo above) but Toyota is promising it will offer high torque (a given for an EV), elegant design – a far cry from the current Land Cruiser – be better – and more comfortable – on-road and offer rough terrain chops.
Expect more details in the coming days.
