Toyota sells two million Hybrid Cars

Toyota has revealed that it passed the two million sales mark for Hybrid cars in August, thanks mainly to the Toyota Prius

Toyota has announced total sales of 2.1 million Hybrid cars to date. The two million mark was passed just two years and three months after Toyota Hybrid Sales passed the one million mark. That first million Hybrid sales took almost a decade, illustrating how strong hybrid sales have become.

You might be surprised to learn that Toyota actually produces a total of thirteen different hybrid models in fifty countries around the world, including a brace of commercial hybrids in Japan. And although the three generations of the Prius have accounted for 1.4 million of those sales (and rising) the first Toyota hybrid wasn’t in fact the Prius. Toyota built the Coaster Hybrid EV for the Japanese market back in 1997.

Toyota are continuing to capitalise on their lead in the Hybrid car market, and are intent on developing hybrid versions across their entire range. As we’ve already reported, the Toyota Auris Hybrid will launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show and the UK built Auris Hybrid will go on sale next year. And that’s just the start. You will see the RAV4 rolled out as a hybrid next year and other Toyota models won’t be far behind.

Toyota’s aim is to build 1,000,000 hybrids a year in the very near future. If they’re going to roll out a hybrid version of every model in their range you probably shouldn’t bet against it happening.

Unless there’s an outbreak of common sense by the great car-buying public.
