1962 E-Type Jaguar auction – a ‘Wags’ delight.

I’m really not too sure there are any footballers wives or girlfriends who hanker after a classic car. I suppose you’d have to think more along the lines of Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly, rather than Posh Spice or Coleen Rooney, for that sort of good taste.

But if there is a Wag out there with a lust for the classic, then the auction house Barons has the perfect car – an unrestored 1962 E-Type with the registration number ‘WAG 7’.

The E-Type was discovered recently when the owner died, and his garages became part of a compulsory purchase order. The E-Type had been stored since 1981, and appears to have only covered 25,000 miles in its life. Totally unrestored, and with a valuable plate (to some), this would be a great project.

The E-Type is the iconic car of the British Motor Industry. It epitomised the 60s; driven by every famous face of the time, from George Best to Twiggy.

I’ve driven one or two E-Types in my time, and they are great fun. By modern standards they are quite slow, but that never-ending bonnet, and the ability to get wheelspin even when changing up to 3rd, makes them a hoot to throw around. The 3.8 was the best engine, but the worst driving car was the early flat-floor, which made the whole driving experience quite uncomfortable.

With an auctioneers estimate of just £22-27k, you could be lucky and get the car for next to nothing once you flog off the number plate to a Premiership Footballer with more money than sense. Just tell him it’d make a great Christmas Present for the girlfriend!
