Last week BMW teased the arrival of the SUV supercar twins – the new X5 M and X6 M – ahead of a reveal at the L.A. Auto Show next month, and now they’re here with more power, more torque and lower emissions than the last models.
In fact, it’s enough power to get the M Twins to 62mph in a very un-SUV 4.2 seconds and on to an electronically limited 155mph. BMW say you will also get 25.4mpg, which may be the official figure although you’ll never do much better than mid-teens.
Under the skin is a new 8-Speed Steptronic gearbox shuffling the cogs with stop-start and regenerative braking and sending the power to all four wheels with up to 100 per cent of the drive going to a single axle when required.
As you’d expect, the X5 M and X6 M don’t just get the power of M they also get the look, with a new front bumper with huge air intakes, flared wheel arches, bigger back bumper, bigger sills and quad tail pipes with standard 20″ alloys or optional 21″.
The standard air suspension has also had a tweak for better responses and gets three electronic modes – comfort, sport and sport plus – as well as active roll bar stabilisation and three mode ESC.
Heading for a reveal at the LA Auto Show next month (and a likely European debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show), the new X5 M and X6 M will arrive in BMW’s UK dealers in April 2015, with the X5 M costing from £90,170 and the X6 M from 93,070.
