The Fiat 500L – Fiat’s oversize take on the successful 500 – gets revamped for 2017 with a makeover including new names – Fiat 500L Cross, Lounge and Wagon.
The Fiat 500L has been with us for more than four years, and despite it having nothing in common with the successful retro-chic Fiat 500 – apart from a ‘500’ badge – it’s managed to parley its almost ironic badge in to showroom sales.
Now it’s time for a change for the 500L, and although you’d be hard pushed to see the changes, Fiat say that 40 per cent of the components are new. And, it would seem, rather well hidden.
Visual exterior changes don’t appear to be much more than the usual facelift tinkering, with new grill and bumpers, titivated lights and some new colours.
Inside, there’s a new multi-function steering wheel, a central TFT display and, if you pay enough, a 7″ Uconnect infotainment with Sat Nav, Apple Car Play and Android Auto. Oddly, there don’t seem to be any photos of the new interior on offer from Fiat.
One main change is a set of new names for the 500L, with the 500L Lounge the ‘regular’ 500L, the ‘Cross’ the renamed Trekking and the new 500L Wagon what was the Living or MPW depending on where you live.
As well as some cosmetic titivation and a new set of names, the 500L now comes with autonomous emergency braking and, at some point in the not too distant, a rear view camera too.
Engine choices are broadly the same with a 1.4 litre petrol with 94bhp or 118bhp, a pair of diesels (93bhp and 118bhp) but, it seems, the UK isn’t getting Fiat’s appealing little 0.9 litre TwinAir lawnmower engine as an option.
The new Fiat 500L costs from £16,195 with first UK deliveries starting in September.
