The 2017 Peugeot 5008 has been revealed as a seven-seat SUV which is longer and wider than the current 5008, as Peugeot dive headlong in to crossovers.
You’d have to have been a hermit in a cave in recent years to not realise that car buyers everywhere have fallen out of love with saloon cars and MPVs – and even hatchbacks, to some extent – and all seem to want to drive a high-riding crossover or SUV instead. That explains why car makers are busy ditching saloons and MPVs and replacing them with SUVs and crossovers, and Peugeot – having turned the 3008 in to an SUV recently – are now doing the same for the 2017 Peugeot 5008.
Peugeot want you to think that the new 5008 may now look like an SUV, but that it’s still as practical as an MPV would be.
In terms of looks, it’s pretty much a supersized new 3008 with dimensions which have grown even from the current 5008, by 11cm in length and width, accentuated by some butch cladding – de rigeur for an SUV – upright back end and strong shoulder line.
Inside looks to be very capacious, with an i-Cockpit dash and Peugeot’s side-plate steering wheel, seven seats, folding passenger seat for long loads and goodies like ambient lighting, massaging seats, panoramic glass roof and LED lights all on offer (depending on model spec).
Engine options are the 128bhp 1.2 litre petrol with a six speed manual gearbox (and auto option), 1.6 litre petrol with 163bhp and auto ‘box, a 1.6 dieel with 118bhp or a 2.0 litre diesel with either 148bhp or 178bhp.
The new Peugeot 5008 looks very promising, but if you want one now you’re out of luck – it won’t be in your local UK Peugeot dealers until Spring 2017.
