Valtteri Bottas takes his third pole position in a row at the 2019 Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, relegating Lewis Hamilton to a poor second place on the grid.
Valtteri Bottas already leads the drivers standings ahead of Lewis Hamilton, and he’s building on that with his third pole position in a row at the 2019 Spanish Grand Prix, beating Hamilton, who will start second, to pole by a very impressive 0.634 seconds.
Last year Bottas was a poor second to Hamilton, but this year he’s matched him with two race wins (and an extra point for quickest lap gives him the lead), and now he can add a very impressive pole – his third in a row – to the list, looking like the ‘senior’ Mercedes driver in the process.
Behind the two Mercedes divers it was another less than impressive qualifying for Ferrari, with Vettel taking third spot – just under a second behind Bottas – and Leclerc only managing fifth, with the Ferraris split by Verstappen in fourth.
Verstappen’s team mate Gasly is sixth in his Red Bull, followed by the Haas of by Grosjean and Magnussen in seventh and eighth, Kvyat in the Toro Ross in ninth and Ricciardo in the Renault in 10th. Hulkenberg in the other Renault qualified in 16th.
Neither McLarens made the top ten, with Norris in 11th and Sainz in 13th, and the Williams of Russell and Kubica finished dead last.
