The Saab 9-4X has gone in to limited production in Mexico
Production of the Saab 9-4X has started in Mexico, with 147 cars being produced so far.
With all the shenanigans going on with the sale of Saab it’s very easy to forget that there is the business of making cars still going on. Not just still going on, but moving forward. We reported last month that Saab were to re-start production in January and it now looks as if the yet to be revealed Saab 9-4X SUV is also being made – albeit in small numbers.
It’s almost a year since we brought you spy shots of the Saab 9-4X out winter testing, and we’ve been expecting a proper reveal of the 9-4X for some time, although the lack of an appearance probably has far more to do with the state of Saab’s ownership than any problems with the car.
In fact, producing the 9-4X is not that big a deal for Saab. It’s not being built in Trollhattan but at GM’s plant in Mexico – and will continue to be even if the sale of Saab to Spyker goes through – and is in essence a Cadillac SRX SUV under the skin.
So why hasn’t Saab announced that the 9-4X has started production? After all, it’s a bit of good news and a sign that Saab isn’t completely comatose. But the reality is that the 147 Saab 9-4Xs which have been produced are to be used for crash testing and other pre-production needs. So nothing to get too excited about, but at least the 9-4X lives – for now.
In a bit of associated news, the sale saga is still continuing, with today’s rumours saying GM and Spyker will announce a deal today.
But we’re not exactly on tenterhooks.
