It’s being reported that Toyota are about to issue a recall in the US and Japan over software issues causing braking problems in the 2009 / 2010 Prius
This whole Toyota Recall mess has got to end somewhere, but not yet. We’re seeing reports coming in that Toyota is about to announce a recall for 3rd generation, 2009 / 2010 Toyota Prius over the brake issue we reported yesterday, and which Toyota admitted to today.
The NHTSA in the US has already launched an enquiry in to the issue – which Cars UK correctly suggested seemed like a software problem – saying they would be looking at “… allegations of momentary loss of braking capability while travelling over an uneven road surface, pothole or bump.”
And now – according to the Nikkei News Service – Toyota are going to issue a recall for 270,000 3rd generation Toyota Prius made up until the start of this year. It seems Toyota knew of the problem and updated the software in the Prius last month, but didn’t seem to think it necessary to recall older cars to fix the issue.
We asked Toyota UK earlier this evening – before the report by Nikkei came in – why a recall hadn’t happened yet. They said:
Enhancements are made on all of our models throughout the lifecycle of the vehicle, which is part of Toyota’s philosopy of ‘kaizen’ (meaning constant improvement). As this current issue is under investigation by Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan I cannot comment further on this until we have updated information.
If the reports from Nikkei are correct we should have a statement from Toyota UK tomorrow.
