Jaguar C-X16 WON’T be the Jaguar XE

Jaguar C-X16 won't be the Jaguar XE

It’s been revealed that the new smaller sport car from Jaguar – the C-X16 Concept – won’t be called the Jaguar XE.

The Jaguar C-X16 Concept – a new smaller sports car based on the next generation XK platform – was revealed at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, and although we were a little underwhelmed with the design – there is nothing wrong with it, it just didn’t seem to move Jaguar’s design language on – we loved what was on offer.

What we did think – in common with just about everyone else – is that Jaguar would make their new Sports car the Jaguar XE, evoking memories of the original E-Type in the process and fitting in with the current Jaguar nomenclature quite well. But it seems not.

Motor Trend managed to bend the ear of JLR boss Ralph Speth at Geneva who stated categorically that the C-X16 will not be called the XE when it launches, but hinted that all will be revealed at next month’s New York Motor Show.

Speth also said that work was ongoing on the C-X75 supercar and that we’ll be seeing six new products from Jaguar in the short term. Two of those are the XF Sportbrake and the production C-X16 and we would guess at two others being an XF Coupe and XF Convertible. But what about the others?

It probably depends on how you define ‘new’ products. If new means a new model, then we could be talking in terms of the Jaguar XJ with the 4.4 diesel lump we talked about a while back as the Jaguar XJ Supersport D, and an XFR-S with the power boost from the XKR-S.

But if we’re talking new variants, rather than re-engined versions of an existing car, then perhaps we could see a new XJ Coupe (penned but denied for production around the time of the new XJ launch) which Jaguar produced in the early XJs and which Adrian Hallmark flagged up as part of a Jaguar wish list last year.

And what else, we hear you ask? Well, your guess is as good as ours. Ideas for new Jaguar models and a new name for the XE in the comments.

You forgot the 4WD platform for the XJ you’ve written about before. That could be the other new Jag.

Perhaps the C-X16 could relaunch the ‘type’? Jaguar C-Type?

Well remembered that man! Yes, the 4WD XJ could be the sixth new Jag – or all our guesses could be wrong!
