Renault Twizy Cargo turns the Twizy EV in to a van

The Renault Twizy EV has been turned in to an electric delivery van in the new Renault Twizy Cargo which dumps the back seats for a lockable boot.

If only the Renault Twizy EV was a sensible price, it would make a perfect commuter car.

With dimensions that give it a footprint not much more than a motor cycle, the Twizy offers much for commuters in congested urban areas. But at pushing on £7k to buy and another £45 a month to lease the batteries, the sums don’t add up.

So Renault has come up with another version of the Twizy – the Renault Twizy Cargo – that dumps the back seats and turns the space in to a small, lockable boot with an opening rear door to make the Twizy a small delivery vehicle.

The space on offer isn’t huge – it’s just 180 litres – but that is enough for a couple of reasonable sized boxes and having a fleet of Electric Twizys delivering stuff round town is probably preferable to chugging diesel vans.

In fact, the Twizy would make a perfect delivery vehicle for takeaways, with a decent number of Pizza boxes fitting in the boot and the driver cosy and dry instead of sitting in the open air on a scooter or moped.

But at €6,750 plus vat in France (we don’t know if Renault are going to offer the Twizy Cargo in the UK yet) plus another €50 a month or so for batteries, Pizza delivery firms are going to have to deliver an awful lot of pizza to make it viable.

Perhaps there are courier firms around delivering high margin products where the Twizy Cargo would work. But the only ones we can imagine aren’t exactly on the right side of the law.
