New 2014 Hyundai i10 revealed – debuts at Frankfurt

We weren’t expecting Hyundai to reveal their new i10 Supermini until the Frankfurt Motor Show next month, but a month ahead of that – and coinciding with the reveal of a stretched Hyundai Grand i10 in India – Hyundai has taken the wraps off the 2014 i10.

The new i10 has grown in size from the current  model – it’s 80mm longer, 65mm wider and has a 5mm longer wheelbase – but it’s also a bit lower – by 50mm – so looks a lot more purposeful.

That extra room – and the availability of equipment like Climate, heated leather steering wheel and Cruise on the i10 – sees Hyundai claiming the new i10 is more like a B-Segment car than an A-Segment one, and that its relocated rear dampers, which give more precise wheel control, and its dynamics, which have been tuned for UK roads, make it feel like a B-Segment car too.

In terms of styling, the new i10 is still clearly an i10, but it does take design cues from more recent Hyundai models, and Hyundai tell us the interior features high quality materials on key surfaces – but don’;t actually show us the interior.

As to what lurks under the bonnet of the new i10, Hyundai aren’t letting on yet. But it seems likely the i10 will still be getting the 1.0 litre 3-cylinder and 1.25 litre 4-cylinder petrol engines the current i10 gets, no doubt tweaked to be a bit more frugal and a bit more powerful than they currently are.

Alan Rushforth, Hyundai’s European COO, said:

New Generation i10 is another significant step forward for Hyundai Motor.  Every aspect of the car has been designed and rigorously developed to meet the demands and needs of European consumers.

New Generation i10 fully embodies Hyundai’s ‘true value’ proposition, bringing higher levels of features and functionality than many buyers would expect to find in a vehicle of this segment.

No doubt we’ll get more on the new i10 – including proper specs, engines and a look at the interior – at some point before the new i10 debuts at Frankfurt in September, before going on sale in the UK and Europe by January 2014.
