Alfa Romeo to launch 8 new cars in next 4 years – Alfa MiTo to be dropped

May 9, 2014 By Cars UK

As part of Fiat Chrysler’s plans to boost sales, Alfa Romeo will deliver 8 new cars by 2018 and drop the MiTo as Alfa plans to take on BMW.

Alfa Romeo has been stuck in the doldrums for quite a while, and is now in the sorry state of having just two cars on sale – the Alfa MiTo and Alfa Giulietta – both compact cars and both with front wheel drive. Not really Alfas, although they’re better than you might expect.

But in a brave plan to turn Alfa Romeo in to a proper force again – a plan we reported was on the cards a year ago – Sergio Marchionne has revealed that Alfa is planning to launch eight new cars in the next four years and concentrate on proper RWD cars with proper driver appeal.

The Alfa MiTo will be dropped – with Fiat doing the heavy lifting on sales at the small end – and a new Giulietta will arrive, probably as both a four-door coupe and an estate.

The Alfa Giulia (or whatever name Alfa finally decide on) will debut in 2015 (and could look a lot like the recent Alfa Gloria Concept) and a larger Alfa to take on cars like the BMW 5 Series and Jaguar XF is also planned.

Also on the way is a more powerful Alfa 4C Cloverleaf and a pair of SUVs, as well as the prospect of a range-topping halo car in the mould of the BMW 6 Series.

Almost all the new Alfas will be based on a new platform Alfa call ‘Giorgio’, which is capable of underpinning everything from compact cars to to large cars and SUVs too.

This ambitious plan will see Fiat/Chrysler spending €5 billion, and they hope that will be enough to boost sales from the current woeful level of 74,000 a year to 400,000.

And, if it brings back real Alfas, it will be money well spent.
