Audi A9 range-topping concept teased ahead of L.A. debut

A tease photo of what we must assume is the long-awaited range-topping Audi A9 Coupe/Fastback has been revealed ahead of an L.A. Auto Show debut.

There have been rumours that Audi will launch a coupe version of the current range-topping A8 for many a year, but it looks like we’re finally about find out exactly what an Audi A9 might offer with the first tease for the A9 ahead of an expected L.A. Auto show debut next month.

Based on the next generation Audi A8/S8, the new A9 will be a large, swoopy coupe aimed at cars like the Porsche Panamera, high-end Mercedes CLS and even the Aston Martin Rapide and, looking at the teaser photo, it looks like it could be a more traditional Shooting Brake design (like the recent Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Concept ) rather than yet another swoopy coupe.

In terms of design, the A9 Concept is likely to preview Audi’s new design direction – a more ‘sporty’ design, we’re told – although it will still feature Audi’s trademark single frame grill.

Drivetrain options are likely to include 4WD, and engine options will be wide-ranging including a new 4.0 litre V8 diesel, a version of the latest 4.0 litre petrol turbo with up to 600bhp and a hybrid version or two.

The Audi A9 Concept will be revealed at the L.A Auto Show in November.
