The Ferrari 488 GTB has been officially revealed as the replacement for the 458, complete with a new turbocharged V8 with 660bhp and 560lb/ft of torque.
For the first time in a recent mid-engined Ferrari, turbocharging arrives to cut emissions, improve economy and, in the process, deliver more power in the 488 GTB’s 3.9 litre turbo V8 than the 458’s naturally aspirated 4.5 litre.
The twin turbochargers deliver 660bhp at 8000rpm from the 3.9 litre V8 (3902cc – good for lower taxes in countries like China) and a huge 560lb/ft of torque at 3000rpm.
The new engine – derived from the V8 in the California T but substantially different – puts its power to the rear wheels through an updated seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox featuring variable torque management for a smooth delivery of torque and ratios intended to deliver progressive acceleration from the new turbo engine. That all adds up to acceleration of 0-62mph in 3.0 seconds dead and on to a top speed of 205mph.
Ferrari has also managed to endow the 488 GTB with a very slippery drag of just 1.67 – a new record for a production Ferrari – offering 50 per cent more downforce than the 458 and less drag thanks to stuff like a double front spoiler, base bleed side intakes, active aerodynamics and vortex generators on the underbody.
Add to all that a revised Side Slip Control 2 with F1-Trac and E-Diff to keep the 488 on the edge without tipping over and you have a properly compelling package.
Ferrari has also played with the interior on the 488 with new switchgear, air vents and instrument panel, although the sometimes contentious steering wheel with all manner of controls bolted on remains.
The Ferrari 488 GTB (GTB stands for Gran Turismo Berlinetta) debuts at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show next month and start being made in the autumn after production of the 458 ends in the summer.
