Coys claim record auction price for one owner Ferrari F40
Coys are claiming a one-owner Ferrari F40, auctioned at the 43rd AVD Oldtimer Grand Prix in Nurburgring, Germany, sold for a ‘record’ €1.12 million.
When you look at some of the truly barking prices people are prepared to pay for classic Ferraris, it’s always astonishing that the wonderful Ferrari F40 seems to be a bit unloved by collectors.Perhaps that’s because they made so many – more than 1300 – or perhaps it’s because, until very recently, the idea of a a turbo-engined Ferrari classic seemed wrong.
But whatever the reasons, until the last year or two you could pick up a decent F40 for around £350k, with only the really exceptional getting close to the £500k mark. But things are changing quickly.
This weekend, Coys sold a one-owner Ferrari F40 for €1.12 million (around £795k), which they claim is an auction record for an F40. Which it may well be, but we are aware of F40s fetching around the £1 million mark privately.
Even at that price, it’s still no more than a new LaFerrari or McLaren P1, and less than an Enzo, F50 or 288 GTO and still represents a good investment – an investment that will be tax free if you ever decide to cash it in.
So if you’re looking for a Ferrari to invest in, the Ferrari F40 could still be it – at least for now.
