The new Porsche Carrera – and Carrera S – have been revealed with a new 3.0 litre turbo engine. But does the new turbo engine sound like a 911 should?
Just last week, the facelift for the 2016 Porsche Carrera – and its more powerful sibling, the Carrera S – was revealed, but the big news wasn’t Porsche’s continuing tweaking of the 911’s cosmetics, but a new, down-sized, 3.0 litre flat-six engine, designed to improve economy and efficiency as well as boost power and performance. The trouble is, the Porsche 911 has a huge anorak following, and messing with the formula – especially forced induction – is something akin to the work of the Dark Lord to the ‘purists’, despite its obvious benefits.
Those benefits mean an increase in power – to 365bhp in the Carrera to 414bhp in the Carrera S – and a 911 Carrera that comes with official economy of 38.2mpg.
But all that is for nothing – in the eyes of the anoraks – if the 911 doesn’t sound right.
In an effort to demonstrate that changing the 911 at the bottom of the range over to forced induction is an all-round sensible thing to do, Porsche has released a new video focussing on the 911’s new engine, highlighting all the benefits and giving us the chance to listen to it in action.
Yes, the exhaust note is accompanied by a dramatic drum soundtrack, but to our ears it sounds convincing. You can even enhance the exhaust sound if you want, and we can hear nothing that would dissuade us from the idea that the new engine is an improvement on the old.
But, if you’re a Porsche anorak, you may well disagree.
