Porsche has unveiled a facelift for the 911, but the facelifted 911 also gets a downsized engine with a new 3.0 litre twin-turbo flat-six with up to 414bhp.
We revealed back in July that Porsche would be downsizing the engines in the 911 Carrera and Carrera S when it came to facelift time, and Porsche previews the 911 facelift with prototype photos. Well, it’s facelift time for the 911 now, and it does indeed get a new 3.0 litre twin-turbo flat-six engine.Of course, Porsche hasn’t downsized the 911’s engine and sacrificed power and performance in the process, as the new 3.0 litre with its twin-turbos delivers 365bhp in the Carrera – that’s up 20bhp on the 3.4 litre lump it replaces – and in the Carrera S there’s a more fulsome 414bhp to play with, resulting in 0-62mph times of 4.2s and 3.9s respectively.
And despite the additional power, Porsche has realised its ambition to make the 911 more frugal (and less emitting) with economy now improving (on the official cycle ) to 38.2mpg with emissions of 169g/km when you opt for the PDK ‘box.
Away from the oily stuff, Porsche has give the 911 new headlights with new LED running lights, titivated the shape of the air intakes, added new tail lights and turned the vents on the boot lid vertical instead of horizontal.
Inside, Porsche’s PCM now comes with Apple Play and Wi-Fi and, if you opt for the Sport Chrono Package, you’ll get configurable vehicle setup that tweaks the PASM, exhaust and PDK and a sport response button that will give you maximum attack for 20 seconds. New technology includes post-collision braking and adaptive cruise.
The 2016 Porsche Carrera – and Carrera S – in both coupe and convertible guises will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week and go on sale in the UK in December. Prices start at £76,412, rising to £94,698, an increase in price of around 2.5 per cent over the current 911.
