The Grand Tour launches – it’s Top Gear on Amazon steroids

The Grand Tour launches

The Grand Tour – Clarkson, Hammond and May’s Top Gear replacement – launches on Amazon Prime and proves how foolish the BBC were to lose the trio.

New Top Gear – the one with Chris Evans and Matt Le Blanc – fell flat on its face as the BBC tried to recreate the grumpy wit that bonds Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.

And if the producers of new Top Gear log-in to Amazon Prime today and watch the first episode of series one of the Grand Tour, they’re likely to throw in the towel.

Because what the trio (plus Andy Wilman and Amazon’s deep pockets) have done is take Top Gear, add even more gloss and cinematography wonder, but keep the essential elements of middle-aged grumpy wit from the presenters intact. And boy, did it work.

The visuals at the start were Hollywood good, with Clarkson travelling from the BBC and a rainy London to a trio of Red White and Blue Mustangs with Hammond and may across the desert in California, joined by a Mad Max convoy of massive worth to be serenaded by the HotHouse Flowers playing I Can See Clearly Now. And that’s just the opening credits.

There was a bit more swearing, jokes the BBC wouldn’t have allowed (we’re like gypsies – only the cars are insured), a dead Carol Vorderman, banter with the audience in a tent, and the holy trinity of hypercars to play with – the McLaren P1, Porsche 918 and a Ferrari LaFerrari.

There’s a new ‘Stig’ (not the Stig – an American), a new track called the Eboladrome (another BBC no-no) and what seem to be lots of new ideas but which, because the constant of Clarkson, Hammond and May are present, seem completely familiar.

Oh, my. How unhappy will the BBC (and it’s bean counters) be today?
