Jaguar i-Pace – the electric Jaguar Crossover – blinds Geneva with its oddness

The Jaguar i-Pace – Jaguar’s electric Crossover Concept from last year’s Los Angeles Motor Show – gets its European debut at the 2017 Geneva Show.

Jaguar has nothing properly new for the Geneva Motor Show this year, but it has brought along the Jaguar i-Pace electric Crossover Concept for its European debut to try and take a bit of gloss off its sibling company’s  first outing for the Range Rover Velar.

Just in case the technical spec and ‘interesting’ design weren’t enough to make the i-Pace stand out in a sea of new and exotic competition, Jaguar decided to paint this i-Pace a retina-burning Photon Red. It worked.

Under the lurid paint job still lies the interesting electric Jaguar Crossover we first saw in Los Angeles in November which is now, we assume, some three months closer to a production reality.

We’re still not sure about the odd proportions with its cab forward look and stance which looks more like high-riding, stretched FWD hatch or ‘Allroad’ than a proper Crossover or SUV, but it’ll probably grow on us. Or not.

And nor are we in favour of electric & alternatively fuelled cars shouting the fact like green evangelists with a design that seems to try hard to be ‘odd’.

That said, there’s probably a market for Premium BEV Crossovers, especially for business users (although that advantage will dissipate somewhat in the next few years) even though the battery technology is still a real barrier.

Performance from the i-Pace’s electric motors (one on each axle for 4WD) is expected to deliver a 4.0 second 0-62mph, although exactly what that will do to the promised 300 mile range it’s probably best not to contemplate. Although real world range will probably be more like 200 miles if you drive anything like a normal Jaguar buyer.

Jaguar say they will deliver the production version of the i-Pace this year, and have it in dealers by 2018 with a look and spec which varies little from this concept.

So it’s probably best we get used to its oddness.

Nothing odd about I-Pace – just a new look for Jag. I’d love one
