New Mercedes G-Class will debut on January 15 2018

The new Mercedes-Benz G-Class – Mercedes’ ‘utilitarian’ off-roader – will debut at the Detroit Motor Show on January 15th 2018, say Mercedes.

The Mercedes G-Class is so old it can be found embedded in Amber, just like insects, according to the latest video tease from Mercedes for the new G-Class (below).

But what the video also tells us is that the new G-Class will be revealed to the world on 15 January at the Detroit Motor Show. And it’ll be an interesting reveal.

There’s little doubt the new G-CLass will still look familiar and, unlike Land Rover and the Defender, it looks like Mercedes are happy to see the G-Class evolve rather than replacing it with something quite different.

But even though we expect the boxy shape to still be very familiar, the new G-Class will, say Mercedes, “impresses under all conditions with its performance”. 

Mercedes also say it will come with state-of-the-art assistance systems  and superb handling. Which would be quite different to the current car which is still rather military, even when it’s poshed-up to the max.

We already know the interior will be a more robust version of the interior we see in Mercedes latest road cars – because Mercedes has already revealed the new G-Class interior – but the G-Class will also come in the the 21st century under the skin too.

That means new suspension – independent at the front – modern electric aided rack and pinion steering, more efficient 4WD and a severe diet.

What exactly is going to be under the bonnet of the new G-Class is still a bit of guesswork, but it’s likely to be a choice of Mercedes latest 2.9 litre diesel and 4.0 litre V8 petrol.
