Zipcar launching fleet of 325 ELECTRIC VW e-Golf in London

Zipcar – the ‘Car Sharing Club’ – is launching a fleet of 325 Volkswagen e-Golfs in London, offering short and one-way hire options for London’s drivers.

Zipcar bill themselves as a ‘Car Sharing Club’, allowing you to hire a car for as little as an hour, and even do it as a one-way trip.

Back in 2016, Zipcar started to offer plug-in hybrid VW Golfs on their short time hire in London, and now they’re going the whole electric hog with a new fleet of 325 Volkswagen e-Golf models set to hit the streets of London.

It’s an eminently sensible move now electric cars are starting to challenge the mainstream and offer enough range for anyone in London to get where they’re going without having to faff around charging the car.

The latest VW e-Golf comes with 134bhp on tap from its electric motor, does 0-62mph in 9.6 seconds – and feels quicker thanks to its instant torque – and has an official range of 186 miles, although VW admit it’s more like a realistic 124 miles. But still enough to get from one side of London to the other.

Geraldine Hingham, VW’s Uk Head of Marketing, said:

We know that inner-city residents are looking for alternatives to car ownership and this development of the relationship between Volkswagen and Zipcar offers the best of both worlds: the benefits of access to a car and zero emission motoring across the UK’s capital.

Zipcar hasn’t given us costs for using the e-Golf, but as a guide the plug-in Golf GTE costs from around £9 an hour – less if you sign up to one of Zipcar’s subscription plans.
