New Mercedes A-Class saloon for UK & Europe
The saloon take on the new Mercedes A-Class is revealed in UK and Europe spec ahead of going on sale in early 2019.
The latest Mercedes A-Class Hatch only went on sale in the UK in March, a month before the Mercedes A-Class Saloon debuted in Beijing. And now the two collide with the reveal of the A-Class Saloon for the UK and Europe market.Unlike the A-Class Saloon revealed in Beijing, the A-Class we’ll get in the UK has the same wheelbase as the Hatch and looks, certainly as far back as the C-pillar, just the same, but from the C-Pillar the roof drops away more sharply to create a back end the same as the Saloon we saw in Beijing.
That leaves the saloon a tiny 18mm longer than the Hatch, and with a bigger boot, although the opening is less accommodating, and a slippier shape; Mercedes say the new saloon is the most aero efficient car on the market with a 0.22 cd.
The interior is a straight pinch from the Hatch, which means one of the best in class even if you will need to tick a few boxes when you order to get it to do what you want it to.
Engine options at launch, after a public debut in Paris in October, will be a singe diesel – the A-Class A 180d – with 114bhp sending power to the front wheels through a 7G-DCT ‘box, and the A 200 petrol with 161bhp and 7G-DCT.
Mercedes, just like Honda with the Civic Saloon, seem to think there’s still a market in the UK for a compact saloon, so it’s going to be interesting to see how the A-Class saloon fares when it arrives in the UK next year.
