Ford Mondeo HYBRID Estate to launch in 2019
Despite rumours that the Ford Mondeo isn’t much longer for this world, Ford has announced it will launch a Mondeo Hybrid Estate in 2019.
Is the Ford Mondeo going to be dropped in the UK and Europe? Probably, but not just yet. In fact, there’s a new Mondeo arriving in 2019.But the ‘new’ Mondeo is likely to be nothing more than a lights and bumpers titivate, although Ford will launch a new Mondeo model – the Ford Mondeo Estate Hybrid.
Ford already offers a Mondeo Hybrid saloon – in Titanium and Vignale spec only – but, perhaps as a retort to the speculation about its demise, or to counter falling diesel sales, the hybrid powertrain from the Hybrid saloon will be planted in the Estate to offer an alternative.
That means a 184bhp 2.0 litre Atkinson petrol engine with an electric motor helping the front wheels, and regenerative braking adding electrickery to the 1.4kW battery pack.
Despite the electric help the Hybrid setup delivers a meagre 128lb/ft of torque (the 2.0 litre diesel has almost 300lb/ft) and comes with a CVT ‘box. How drivers used to a more punchy diesel Mondeo estate will get on with it we’re not too sure.
Roelant de Waard, Ford’s Sales VP, said:
For many customers the practicality offered by a estate body style is an absolute must, so we’re excited to announce that from next year those drivers will also be able to reduce their fuel bills using the sophisticated petrol-electric powertrain of our new Mondeo hybrid estate.
Electrified powertrains will continue to play a key role in our European product line-up. Ford is investing $11 billion and plans to deliver 16 fully electric vehicles within a global portfolio of 40 electrified vehicles by 2022.
Ford say they’ll release full specs and prices for the Mondeo Hybrid Estate closer to its spring 2019 launch, but expect it to start at a touch under £28k.
