The range-topping BMW X7 is revealed as BMW deliver an SUV to challenge the Range Rover and Mercedes GLS. Costs from £72,155.
The BMW X7 has been at least a decade in the making, in one way or another, but now it’s here and it’s big, bold and a convincing challenge to the Mercedes GLS – although perhaps not the Range Rover.Previewed by last year’s Concept X7, the production take on the X7 is no less bold, with a thumping great grille you can’t miss it, but it probably needs it to balance its size – it’s actually bigger than a Range Rover.
That makes for room inside for three rows of seats – either seven or a 2+2+2 layout – with enough room left in the boot for 326 litre of ‘stuff’, or a Transit-bashing 2,120 with the back seats folded away, with a dashboard heavily influenced by the new X5 with digital instruments and 12.3″ infotainment, climate, soft-close doors and a three-piece glass roof.
BMW has confirmed three engine options, with the X7 xDrive 30d. X7 M50d and X7 xDrive 40i, with the the 3.0 litre diesel delivering 261bhp and 0-62mph in 7.0 seconds, the 3.0 litre petrol with 335bhp and 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds and the quad-turbo 3.0 litre diesel in the M50d delivering 394bhp and 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds.
All come with BMW’s xDrive 4WD system and eight-speed automatic, with the M50d getting an M Sport diff, and there’s also an X7 off-road package on offer if you want it.
Prices for the new BMW X7 start at £72,155 for the X7 30d, with the X7 40i starting at £74,155 and the X7 M50d at £87,240. The X7 goes on sale in the UK in April 2019.
