BMW iNEXT teased in Design Sketch
The BMW iNEXT – a new electric flagship for BMW – will arrive in production in 2021, ahead of which BMW has revealed a teaser sketch before a concept arrives later in 2018.
The electric ‘Future’ continues apace as car makers seek to transition to a world they are convinced will be propelled exclusively by electricity in the not too distant future. In part it’s a knee-jerk reaction to the dieselgate issues and the continuing tightening of tail pipe emissions regulations, but it does seem to be more about creating a market rather than responding to a market want. Always a dangerous tactic; if it works then all is rosy, but car companies around the world seem to be betting the farm on EVs.
BMW is perhaps being a bit more circumspect than other premium car makers when it comes to EVs and Autonomy, but it too is heading deep in to an electric future, and at their AGM yesterday Board Chairman Harald Kruger revealed an initial design concept for a new electric BMW iNEXT (above).
The iNEXT isn’t going to hit the road until 2021 – and will be built in Germany – but BMW are planning a proper iNEXT Concept later this year, and the design sketch tease is meant to point us in the right direction.
From what we can see, the iNEXT looks to be some sort of Shooting Brake or Crossover rather than a new range-topping electric saloon, and Kruger says it will be BMW’s new technology Flagship: “We are combining all key technologies for future mobility in one vehicle“, he said. That means an electric car with a high degree of autonomy.
No doubt, as the reveal of the new iNEXT Concept nears, we’ll get something more concrete.

We had much the same initial thoughts, but design sketches are usually so much more dynamic looking than what turns up that this could easily end up looking more like an electric X7 than a Sport Turismo!
