Caterham Superlight Twenty celebrates 20 years since the first Superlight
The Caterham Superlight Twenty is a limited run of 20 ‘Superlight’ Caterhams celebrating 20 years since the original. Costs from £29,995.
It’s 20 years since the 1.6 litre Seven Superlight arrived from Caterham, and to celebrate Caterham are building a limited run of 20 Caterham Superlight Twenty models to celebrate, which will debut at this weekend’s Goodwood Revival.
The Superlight hasn’t been built for more than a decade, but it was the blueprint for the current generation of Caterham track-focused cars and sold well – around 200 were actually built which, for a company like Caterham, is a good number.
Costing £29,995, the Superlight Twenty gets a 135bhp Ford Sigma engine, Sport suspension pack, limited slip diff and a six-speed close ratio gearbox. Caterham has used carbon fibre for the wings, nose and screen with the body finished in bare aluminium.
Inside, there’s a dash plaque denoting its limited edition status, a unique set of dials and a gear knob with ‘Superlight Twenty’ inscribed, splashes of carbon fibre and embroidered carbon sports seats borrowed from the Seven 620 R.
The spec is minimal – as befits a Caterham – and is only available as a Series 3 chassis with just paint, heater and weather equipment as options.
Graham Macdonald, Caterham boss, said:
When Caterham created the original Superlight, it was a big hit. We sold every one we built and it inspired the development of future models.
As well all the five-star reviews and animated feedback from customers for its driver appeal and roisterous character, it always represented excellent value by being a genuinely accessible performance car bargain – which is why we’ve tried to recreate that magic by celebrating the 20th anniversary of its launch.
Despite its modest output, the Superlight Twenty can hit 62mph in 4.9 seconds and on to 122mph. Not the must stunning figures, but it’ll feel hugely quicker when you’re behind the wheel.
The Caterham Superlight Twenty is now on sale in the UK priced at £29,995.
