Honda has confirmed they are to produce 20 Mugen Civic Type R for the UK at £38,599.
We ran a similar story back in June. We’d heard that Mugen were working on creating a version of the disappointing Civic Type R, but we had nothing official. Then Mugen confirmed that a Civic Type R Muge Prototype was being developed. As we said at the time – yeah, right.
So as we expected, the official release has come and there will be a Civic Type R Mugen in the UK. But there will only be 20 cars made and each will cost £38,599. A rather large premium of £12k over the stock Type R. Ouch.
We have no doubt that the Mugen Type R will be a properly sorted and fettled version of the stodgy Civic Type R. But £12k sorted? Yes, it gets its 2.0 litre i-VTEC engine thoroughly sorted with new pistons and camshaft, a tweaked ECU and new exhaust. That yields an extra 30bhp and drops the 0-60mph time to around 6 seconds.
The Mugen Type-R gets be-jewelled and be-winged with an aero kit and huge rear spoiler plus tweaks to the brakes and suspension. But really, £38.5k is too much for a Type-R, even a very sorted Type-R. That’s the same as a Focus RS with change over for a decent spec Fiesta for she who must be obeyed. It’s a Scirocco R and change for a fortnight in the Seychelles.
But they will sell. Especially as there are only 20. Check out all the bumph in the Honda Civic Type R MUGEN Press Release.
